PageNotes Privacy Policy
Effective Date: May 20, 2026
Developer Contact: PageNotes (getpagenotes@gmail.com)
PageNotes is a local-first browser extension designed to help you capture and organize sticky notes. This Privacy Policy explains how PageNotes handles data.
1. Local-First Architecture
PageNotes is built to work entirely within your local browser environment.
- Local Storage: All notes, categories, colors, source URLs, and configuration settings are saved on your computer using Chrome’s local storage API (
chrome.storage.local).
- No Servers: We do not operate any web servers for note storage. Your notes are never transmitted to us or any third parties.
- No Accounts: You do not need to create an account, register, or log in to use PageNotes.
PageNotes stores the following information locally in your browser when you explicitly choose to create or save it:
- Sticky Notes Content: The body text, title, and color of your notes.
- Categories: Custom categories you create to organize your notes.
- Context Menu Selection: PageNotes does not automatically read webpage text. It only saves selected text when you highlight text on a webpage, right-click, and select “Save selection to PageNotes.”
- Source URLs: When you capture a note via the right-click context menu, PageNotes saves the source webpage URL (
sourceUrl). This is stored locally solely to allow you to click the link later and return to the webpage where you created the note.
3. Browsing Activity
PageNotes does not track your browsing history. Source URLs are saved only for notes created through the explicit selected-text capture action. PageNotes does not monitor, log, or analyze the websites you visit.
4. Data Control and Portability
You have control over your PageNotes data:
- Exporting Data: You can export all your notes and categories at any time using the Export JSON feature. This generates a local JSON file on your machine.
- Exported Files: Exported JSON files are saved wherever you choose on your device. PageNotes does not control or protect exported files after they are downloaded.
- Importing Data: You can import notes from a previously exported PageNotes JSON file.
- Deleting Data: You can delete individual notes and categories in the extension. You can also remove all PageNotes data by uninstalling the extension from Chrome.
- Uninstalling: Uninstalling PageNotes from Chrome will remove the extension’s local browser storage. This does not delete any JSON export files you previously saved outside the extension.
5. No Cloud Sync, Sharing, or Sale of Data
- No Transmission: Your notes are not transmitted to us or to third parties.
- No Sale or Sharing: We do not sell, rent, trade, share, or disclose your notes.
- No Cloud Synchronization: Your notes do not sync across different browsers or devices unless you manually export and import the JSON file.
- Limited Use: PageNotes uses stored note data only to provide and improve the note-taking features described in this policy.
6. No Analytics, Telemetry, or Advertising
- No Tracking: PageNotes does not contain any analytics scripts, tracking pixels, telemetry probes, or advertising SDKs.
- No Third-Party APIs: PageNotes does not communicate with external analytics, tracking, monitoring, advertising, or note-storage APIs.
7. Data Security
PageNotes stores data using Chrome’s extension storage system. We do not transmit your notes to our servers. You are responsible for protecting access to your browser profile and any exported JSON files you create.
8. Permissions Justification
Chrome Web Store requires extensions to declare and justify permissions. PageNotes uses the minimum permissions required to function:
storage: Required to persist notes, categories, colors, source URLs, and app data locally in the browser.
contextMenus: Required to show the “Save selection to PageNotes” option when you right-click selected text.
sidePanel: Required to display a larger PageNotes note editor in Chrome’s side panel so users can keep a selected note open while browsing.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected in extension updates and in this document.
